2018 Oscar-nominated Shorts: Documentary

Join us for an extravaganza of great films when we present the Oscar-nominated Shorts program featuring  potential Oscar winners ~ each of which was selected from hundreds of entries in its respective category: Documentary, Live Action and Animation. This showcase of the best in short films is only available for a limited time each year so take advantage of this opportunity to partake of this eclectic selection of films representing countries all over the world across three genres.

Please note that in order to see all of the Oscar-nominated Short Documentaries, which run more than three hours in length, you will need to see both Programs A and B. Due to the run time, all of the Oscar-nominated Shorts: Docs will not be run at one time. Instead, to see them all will require two visits to the theater.  

PROGRAM A (Running Time: 102 minutes)

Traffic Stop – Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, USA, 30 minutes
Traffic Stop chronicles the pursuit and arrest an of African-American schoolteacher Breaion King in Austin in 2015. Caught on police dashcams, King was pulled from her car by the arresting officer, repeatedly thrown to the ground and handcuffed. En route to jail in a squad car, she engaged in a revealing conversation with her escorting officer about race and law enforcement in America.
Edith + Eddie – Laura Checkoway and Thomas Lee Wright, USA, 29 minutes
Edith and Eddie, ages 96 and 95, are America's oldest interracial newlyweds. Their love story is disrupted by a family feud that threatens to tear the couple apart.
Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405 – Frank Stiefel, USA, 40 minutes
This is a portrait of a brilliant 56 year old artist, Mindy Alper, who is represented by one of Los Angeles' top galleries. Her body of raw, emotional work reveals a lifetime of extreme depression and anxiety. Her only consistent means of communicating has been to channel her hyper self-awareness into drawings and sculpture of powerful psychological clarity.

 

PROGRAM B (Running Time: 82 minutes)

Heroin(e) – Elaine McMillion Sheldon and Kerrin Sheldon, USA, 39 minutes
In this heart-wrenching documentary, a judge, a social worker and a fire chief do their best to combat the opioid epidemic in their West Virginia community.
Knife Skills – Thomas Lennon, USA, 40 minutes
What does it take to build a world-class French restaurant? What if the staff is almost entirely men and women just out of prison? Knife Skills follows the hectic launch of Edwins restaurant in Cleveland. In this improbable setting, with its mouth-watering dishes and its arcane French vocabulary, we discover the challenges of men and women finding their way after their release.

Call Me By Your Name, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, This sensual, powerfully affecting and transcendent tale of first love is based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. It's the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian, spends his days in his family's 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator. One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio's father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever. The film has scored six Spirit Award nominations, and Chalamet and Hammer are Golden Globe and SAG nominees.
