Lady Bird

Tues. 11/21 - Thurs. 12/21

(R) 1 Hr. 38 Min. (Digital) In English (Comedy, Drama)

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California, in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Major congratulations are in order for Greta Gerwig.  Lady Bird  has become the best reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes (rottentomatoes.com) with a 100% score after 165 reviews. The previous record holder was “Toy Story 3,” which has a 100% score from 163 reviews.  Lady Bird’s  critical success has been matched at the box office, where the A24-released film has already earned over $10 million without even playing in 800 theaters yet.  Lady Bird is nominated for three Gotham Awards, including Best Actress, and four Film Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Actress and Best Feature. The film is expected to be a contender at the Oscars next year, especially now that the box office is taking off.

The Shape of Water

Opens Fri. Dec. 22

(R) 1 Hr. 59 Min. (Digital) In English

From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes The Shape of Water - an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. In life, the two  most powerful forces are love and water and in del Toro’s film, the two come together in this masterpiece of modern cinema. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.

“One of [del Toro's] deepest, most complex, most rewarding, and flat-out beautiful films.” ~ RogerEbert.com

A Christmas Story

Mon. 12/18 - Fri. 12/22

(PG-1983) 1 Hr. 33 Min. (Blu-ray) In English

Both warmly nostalgic and darkly humorous, A Christmas Story deserves its status as a holiday perennial so we're bringing it back to the Big Screen where it's seldom seen! In the 1940s, in the town of Hammond, 9-year-old Ralphie wants one thing for Christmas -- an official Red Ryder BB rifle. When he asks his mother for the BB gun, she says, "No, you'll shoot your eye out." When he writes an essay about it at school, his teacher says the same thing. And then Santa concurs, "You'll shoot your eye out, kid." Ralphie fears that he'll never get the BB gun for Christmas. But there may be a surprise in store for him. Starring Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, Ian Petrella as his brother, Randy, and Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin as his mom and dad.

It's A Wonderful Life

Tues. 12/19 - Sun. 12/24

(PG-1946) 2 Hrs. 10 Min. (DVD) In English

Now see Frank Capra's five-time Oscar nominated film It's A Wonderful Life on the Big Screen! The beloved story is about George Bailey (James Stewart), an affable man who's never turned his back on a friend in need, and yet he's a terrible pessimist who believes his family, and the townspeople of Bedford Falls, would be better off without him. When Angel Second Class Clarence (Henry Travers) shows him what Bedford Falls would be like had he had never been born, George sees the error of his ways, and Clarence earns his wings. Although the film wasn't a box office success upon its release in 1946, it went on to become a Christmas tradition and why not? It's A Wonderful Life is, above all,  a moving and profound cinematic experience where prayer coupled with karma leads to a joyously happy ending and where, for just a moment, we catch a hint of the divine. Even an angel without his wings will tell you that's a rarity. Also starring Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore and Thomas Mitchell.
