Wonder Wheel

Opens Fri. Dec. 15

(PG-13) 1 Hr. 41 Min. (Digital) In English (Drama)

In this latest from writer/director Woody Allen, the lives of four characters intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s;  Ginny (Kate Winslet), an emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty (Jim Belushi), Ginny's rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome young lifeguard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina (Juno Temple), Humpty's long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father's apartment. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro captures a tale of passion, violence, and betrayal that plays out against the picturesque tableau of a vibrant Coney Island of long ago.

White Christmas

Thurs. 12/21 - Sun. 12/24

(G-1954) 2 Hrs. (Blu-ray) In English

A Yuletide season must-see since its release in 1954, Irving Berlin's White Christmas stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney in a heartwarming romantic comedy set to the music of one of the 20th century's greatest songwriters, composer and lyricist Irving Berlin, whose song "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep" was nominated in 1955 for an Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song.  After two World War II Army buddies, Bob Wallace (Crosby) and Phil Davis (Kaye), form a successful song-and-dance act, they follow two sisters, Betty (Clooney) and Judy (Vera-Ellen) to a Vermont ski-lodge to perform a Christmas show. When they get there, however, they find that it hasn't snowed since Thanksgiving and that the lodge, which is owned by their old Army general Thomas Waverly (Dean Jagger), is on the verge of failing. To help out, Bob and Phil come up with a plan to help, and fall in love in the process. White Christmas continues to be a favorite that's always best seen on the Big Screen.

Lady Bird

Tues. 11/21 - Thurs. 12/21

(R) 1 Hr. 38 Min. (Digital) In English (Comedy, Drama)

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California, in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Major congratulations are in order for Greta Gerwig.  Lady Bird  has become the best reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes ( with a 100% score after 165 reviews. The previous record holder was “Toy Story 3,” which has a 100% score from 163 reviews.  Lady Bird’s  critical success has been matched at the box office, where the A24-released film has already earned over $10 million without even playing in 800 theaters yet.  Lady Bird is nominated for three Gotham Awards, including Best Actress, and four Film Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Actress and Best Feature. The film is expected to be a contender at the Oscars next year, especially now that the box office is taking off.
