Victoria & Abdul

Fri. 10/13 - Thurs. 11/2

(PG-13) 1 Hr. 53 Min. (Digital) In English

The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria's (Academy Award winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen's Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

In Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

Sat. Oct. 14

(R-2002) 2 Hrs. (Blu-ray) In English (Drama, Romance)

The State is partnering with the Modesto Certified Farmers Market and the Dia de Los Muertos-Modesto committee to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with a special screening of the biopic Frida. This biography of one of Mexico's most prominent, iconoclastic painters was produced by and stars Salma Hayek, who ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts the life of Frida Kahlo. The film follows Kahlo from her affluent upbringing in Mexico City, to Diego Rivera’s (Alfred Molina) protégée to world-renowned artist in her own right. Dress up like Frida and compete for prizes. There will be an alter, an art show, Folklorico dancers, and more starting at noon.

Doors at 12; film at 1 p.m.

Z is For Zombie: An Improvised Apocalypse

Sat. Oct. 14

Doors at 5; show at 6 p.m.

In this hilarious one-act, completely improvised play, Synergy Theater plays off a devastating zombie apocalypse for laughs with clever, off-the-cuff humor and laugh-out-loud one-liners.  No one in town knows who is still human, and who has become a blood thirsty zombie ~ not even the cast! Which of the townsfolk are the undead? Who can be trusted? Who will be devoured only to become a walking  corpse? And who will be the last human improviser standing?  Find out in this uproariously funny, edge-of-your-seat horror show from the same actors behind last year’s Spontaneous Shakespeare, an astonishingly funny play that drew the audience to their feet for a standing ovation.
This show is appropriate for ages 13 and above.  Some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13.

Admission:  $12 for adults; $6 for students
