In this magnificent filmic essay, director Doug Nichol explores the mythology attached to the typewriter, as cultural historians, collectors and various obsessives (including Tom Hanks, John Mayer, David McCullough, Sam Shepard) celebrate the physicality of the typewriter both as object and means of summoning the creative spirit. It also movingly documents the struggles of California Typewriter in Berkeley, CA, one of the last standing repair shops in America dedicated to keeping the aging machines clicking. A fascinating combination of history and emotional narrative plunges us into the mysterious, bittersweet moment in which a beloved technology faces extinction and delivers a thought provoking meditation on our analog past, and  the changing dynamic between humans and machines.

The db project is returning to The State for its 4th Annual Benefit Concert for Center for Human Services.  All proceeds from the event will go to teen shelter programs  Hutton House and Pathways.  Headlining is Paperback Writer, a Beatles experience that takes audiences on a musical journey with the most popular rock group of all time.  Hear the hits from the Ed Sullivan Show through the colorful Sgt. Pepper's years and to the roof tops of Let It Be performed with spot on vocals, looks and sounds.  The San Francisco Chronicle called this dazzling national show “Amazing.”  The Los Angeles Times said it’s a “Sensational show for all ages.”  Paperback Writer is guaranteed to bring audiences the most precise and exciting Beatles experience possible. 

Also appearing is local artist, teacher and classical guitarist Darin Morris, the founder of VMI Rocks school of rock and co-founder of the three-time Mama Award-winning Modstock Music Festival.  Modstock will be held on August 6, 2017 at Graceada Park. 

General admission tickets are $25 in advance & $30 at the door
