The Midwife

9/8 - 9/14

(NR) 1 Hr. 57 Min. (Digital) In French with English subtitles (Art House & International, Drama)

Two of French cinema's biggest stars shine in this bittersweet drama about the unlikely friendship that develops between Claire (Catherine Frot), a talented but tightly wound midwife, and Béatrice (Catherine Deneuve), the estranged, free-spirited mistress of Claire's late father. Though polar opposites in almost every way, the two come to rely on each other as they cope with the unusual circumstance that brought them together in this sharp character study from the César-award winning director Martin Provost (Séraphine).
“A closely observed, intelligently imagined and realized presentation of contrasting personalities.” ~ Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Trip to Spain

(NR) 1 Hr. 55 Min. (Digital) In English (Art House & International, Comedy)

Fri. 9/8 - Thurs. 9/21

After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country's gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the localesare breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish.

David Gilmour Live at Pompeii

Wed. Sept. 13

Doors at 6; film at 7 p.m.

The State is among select cinemas worldwide to premiere David Gilmour’s new film, David Gilmour Live At Pompeii, on Sept. 13. The film sees Gilmour return to the legendary site of the ancient Roman amphitheater 45 years after he performed there with Pink Floyd for Adrian Maben's now iconic film Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii. In doing so, Gilmour became the first-ever rock musician to perform at the venue to a live audience (Pink Floyd legendarily performed in an empty amphitheater in the 1972 documentary). David Gilmour Live At Pompeii was compiled from his two shows at the venue on July 7 and 8 last year and features tracks from Gilmour's last two solo albums, On An Island (2006) and Rattle That Lock (2015), as well as Pink Floyd's classics such as Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, One Of These Days and the rarely heard Great Gig In The Sky. Filmed in 4K, to be presented in Dolby Atmos sound, the film features lasers, pyrotechnics and world-class music.

Admission: $12
